The glorious chapter written by Vakkom Moulavi and Ramakrishna Pillai in the history of political journalism in Kerala is a remarkable partnership between a bold owner and an intrepid editor

It was on January 19, 1905 that the first issue of Swadeshabhimani (“The Patriot”) rolled out of the new automatic flatbed printing press that Vakkom Abdul Qadir Moulavi imported from England exclusively for printing his political weekly.  (more…)

I am delighted to be here this evening to give the Bashir Memorial Lecture under the auspices of the Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust. Vakkom Moulavi was, of course, a very distinguished figure in the first half of this century; a personality with a variety of accomplishments-journalist, scholar, reformer, some one who worked both for the downfall of political autocracy and for the demolition of religious obscurantism.
